Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center launches new art gallery, school

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center and the SBC Foundation officials Wednesday opened a new Latino Art Gallery and Visual Arts School on the city’s West Side.

The new gallery and school was made possible through a $500,000 grant given by the SBC Foundation, the philanthropic arm of San Antonio-based SBC Communications Inc. [snip]

Hispanics in business for themselves

More Latinos start businesses
Increasingly, blacks also become entrepreneurs
– reported by the Houston Chronicle¹

Latinos and immigrants start companies at higher rates than white non-Latinos, while blacks increasingly are jumping into business ownership, a new study finds.

Among other findings of the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity: 550,000 businesses launch each month nationally — an average of 0.36 percent of the adult population. That rate has remained roughly unchanged over the study period, 1996 to 2004.

Recent media coverage on the popularity of real estate in Houston to Latin Americans leads me to the thought that it must be a really really slow news month… in spite of hurricane activity and the upcoming elections:

• Latin Americans buying up Houston real estate, from KHOU CBS Channel 11². “Economic and security concerns are driving more citizens from Mexico and Latin America to buy real estate in the United States, particularly in Houston.”
• From the Houston Chronicle, Houston becoming home away from the homeland. “Economic and crime worries spur Latin Americans to buy real estate in the Bayou City.”¹
• From Click2Houston.com, More Latin Americans Buying Real Estate In Houston. “Economic, Security Concerns Prompt Mexicans, Latin Americans To Buy U.S. Real Estate.”¹
