Primary Showdown Benefits Telemundo, Univision as Clinton, Obama Camps Pour Money Into Lone Star State

The Hispanic market in Texas is seeing an unprecedented boom in campaign spending as presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton vie for supremacy in the Lone Star state.

Together, the candidates spent nearly $2 million advertising to Spanish-speaking Hispanics in California, and broadcasters are saying spending ahead of the March 4 Texas primary could top that.

being bilingual can help your job search

Posted in News at 12:12 am by Paloma Cruz

Did you know that being bilingual is actually a good thing? Forget what mainstream media and vocal portions of society are yelling, Steven Jungman (recruiting director), says that being bilingual is “a big deal as job market sags.”

But those who are bilingual may have an edge, said Jungman, who also heads the Houston chapter of the National Society for Hispanic Professionals.

The society is hosting a job fair Thursday for bilingual speakers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Westin Galleria. More than 22 companies will participate, including AT&T, Pfizer and BP.

immigration hard-liners dismayed at McCain’s lead

Border-control activists bemoan McCain’s rise
Immigration hard-liners feel GOP frontrunner too soft on their issue

– Houston Chronicle2

But now activist groups working to limit illegal immigration are
stunned and dismayed by the rise of Arizona Sen. John McCain as the
likely Republican presidential nominee — and a threat to their work and
cause.

In their world, McCain is a traitor because he fought for a landmark
bill last year that offered a path to citizenship for undocumented
residents, a move some critics derided as “amnesty.”

the importance of the Hispanic vote

Hispanics Decide California for Clinton
– HispanicBusiness.com

A long Super Tuesday night rolled into Wednesday morning with no clear front-runner emerging on the Democratic side and a new shuffle once again among Republican contenders for the White House.

Sens. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. and John McCain, R-Ariz., both won California and New York, but patches of wins and losses throughout the middle of the country left neither candidate in a position to end the presidential nominating contest that will now stretch deeper into February.

“Tonight you voted in record numbers, not just to make history, but to remake America,” Clinton told a crowd of supporters in New York just as polls were closing in California, the state with the biggest prize of the night.

Houston police “do enough” on illegal immigration

Mayor: City cops do enough on illegal immigration
– Houston Chronicle2

Mayor Bill White defended the city’s policy on police screening of arrestees for illegal immigrants.

At the weekly press conference, I asked him if he thought Sheriff Tommy Thomas’ recent request for federal training for his jailers (story) would lead the city to reconsider its own policy.

White said, in essence, no.

“I think it will erode the capacity of local law enforcement if local law enforcement starts assuming more and more federal functions.”

Harris County jailers check for immigration status

Immigration training for jails draws praise
The program sought by Harris County sheriff is called successful in other states

– Houston Chronicle2

The federal immigration training program Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas wants for a dozen jailers has been successful in identifying illegal immigrants in Arizona and Oklahoma, officials there said.

Harris County would be the first law enforcement agency in Texas to receive training from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, joining 34 departments from Florida to California that have undergone the training. Thomas announced Friday that he authorized his department to pursue the program.

The training would give employees the ability to interview inmates more thoroughly about their immigration status and authorize them to detain those in the country illegally.

Seventy departments are on a training waiting list, including four in Texas, but an ICE official would not identify them until formal agreements are signed.
