Illegal immigrants decrease
The Center for Immigration Studies reports that the illegal immigrant population in the US is dropping. “Our best estimate is that the illegal immigrant population has declined by 11 percent through May of this year after hitting a peak in August 2007.” Am I the only person who thinks that that’s sad?

Price put at $1.8 trillion
Study: That’s what U.S. would lose if undocumented immigrants vanished
– Houston Chronicle2
If the 8.1 million undocumented immigrants who cut lawns, bus tables and perform other jobs disappeared overnight, the nation’s economy would lose nearly $1.8 trillion in annual spending.
Texas, the second-hardest-hit state after California, would lose 1.2 million undocumented workers and $220.7 billion in expenditures.
These are just some of the findings from a study done by the Perryman Group, a Waco-based economic analysis firm, whose work was commissioned by Americans for Immigration Reform, a group spearheaded by the Greater Houston Partnership.

What is Cinco de Mayo? It’s the anniversary of a revolutionary battle between Mexico and… France, I think. It’s a holiday that isn’t really celebrated in Mexico, so I’m always amused at the amount of attention it garners in the US.
How did you celebrate?

More legal immigrants becoming citizens
Reasons include rush to beat fee increase and measures that target groups
– reported by the Houston Chronicle
[snip]
On Wednesday, 2,145 immigrants became U.S. citizens at a ceremony in Cypress, part of a recent spike in naturalizations in the Houston area and across the country. Immigration advocacy groups attributed the increase to an upcoming fee hike, and, to a lesser degree, legislation that could affect immigrant communities, such as a proposed rental ordinance in the Dallas-area suburb of Farmers Branch.
In the past six months, the number of legal immigrants who completed the naturalization process in Houston increased by 44 percent, from 8,035 to 11,573, compared with the same time period last year, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services statistics.

I always find helpful and interesting information when it’s too late to do anything with it. This is no exception: ‘Las Posadas de Miel’ a guide for the Holidays. It is “an all-purpose Spanish-language guide with tips on how to host the perfect Posada, create delicious holiday recipes incorporating 100% pure honey, and a list of the most popular Posadas held each year across the country.”
If you want to access the guide directly, go to this pdf link.
